Good afternoon, Good Shepherd Families. We are coming to a close on the first week of our 2017-18 school year. It has certainly been an exciting week at our school!
We kicked off the school year with our annual Camp Hill Pool party on Saturday, August 19th. Despite some stormy weather, many of our GSS students and their families still came out to show their support and to make this much-anticipated event a success.
On Monday, August 21st, we welcomed our students in grades 1-8 back for another school year. A large part of the first day excitement came from the fact that that date coincided with the date of the solar eclipse.
Due to some last-minute concerns about the safety of our viewing glasses, we were forced to cancel our previously scheduled activities. However, thanks to the generosity of one of our teachers who had purchased a small number of safety glasses from a different NASA-approved vendor, we were able to extend the opportunity to view the eclipse to our older students in grades 5-8, and to a handful of younger students as well. (You might say they also got a valuable lesson in sharing!) The younger grades 1-4 were thrilled to be able to view the NASA live feed in their classrooms. Even though things didn’t exactly go as planned, our school was able to come together and experience the awesome spectacle of the eclipse after all.
We were joined Monday afternoon by Jennifer Reed, Managing Editor of the Catholic Witness. A self-proclaimed “astronomy-geek,” Jennifer was thrilled to have been invited to witness this rare event with our students. Monday’s events will be featured in an upcoming article in the Catholic Witness, and Jennifer was kind enough to mention our school on the Diocese of Harrisburg Facebook page. Be sure to check it out!
Tuesday, August 22nd, marked the first day for our Pre-K and Kindergarten classes. We saw many new faces, and we are thrilled to welcome the new families who have become a part of Good Shepherd School this year.
In other exciting news, Good Shepherd School is now on Twitter! For those of you who are unfamiliar with Twitter, it is an online news and social networking service where users post and interact with messages, or “tweets.” This will be a valuable tool in enhancing communication within our GSS family. If you are already registered on twitter, please follow us at: @GSSCHPA. If you’d like to create an account, it is quick and easy. Visit twitter.com.
Back to School Night for parents of students in grades 1-8 kicked off tonight at 6:30pm in the gymnasium.
There is excitement in the air at GSS this year! We are looking forward to many new opportunities and growth, and we are certain that this will be our best year ever!
